Medical equipment case study of Odne, endodontics revolutionary
In the world of medical technology, innovation is not just about developing new materials and technologies. It is also about transforming them into functional, ergonomic, and aesthetically distinctive products. This is precisely the case of Odne, a Swiss startup that has revolutionized endodontics by developing an innovative root canal filling material. This breakthrough has introduced a completely new approach to Root Preservation Therapy (RPT).
At Fuso Design, we had the opportunity to support Odne in its growth journey. Our collaboration focused on the industrial design of OdneFill and OdneCure. This partnership led to the creation of cutting-edge products, contributing to the company’s rapid expansion. As a result, it culminated in significant investments, FDA certification, and recognition with two of the world’s most prestigious design awards.
From research to innovation: the development of OdneFill and OdneCure
When Odne approached us to design OdneFill, the main challenge was clear. The goal was to create one of the smallest endodontic syringes on the market while ensuring ergonomics, functionality, and distinctiveness. The company had already developed an innovative root canal filling material. However, it needed a precise and safe application device to maximize its potential. The design process required multiple iterations and prototypes. We addressed several key technical challenges, including:
- Ultra-compact dimensions, maintaining perfect ergonomics for everyday use.
- Biocompatible materials and seamless integration of the Thinnest Dental Tip [190µm].
- A balance between aesthetics and performance ensures a distinctive and highly functional design.
- Optimized manufacturability, making sure the design could be easily produced on a large scale.
Following the success of OdneFill, our collaboration continued in 2022 with the development of the OdneCure curing light. In this case, the design needed to seamlessly integrate advanced technology, particularly an ultra-thin microfiber tip. This innovation enables maximum precision and effectiveness in endodontic treatments. Similar to OdneFill, OdneCure also required a meticulous engineering & prototyping process. To guarantee maximum usability and reliability, we conducted extensive testing on materials and ergonomic performance.
Ongoing collaboration: packaging, patents, prototyping and testing
Beyond product design, our support has been ongoing over the years, assisting Odne in multiple development phases. Our contributions include:
- Packaging design, ensuring protection during transport and the brand’s premium identity.
- Drawings for patent registration, essential for securing intellectual property rights.
- Prototyping and testing including custom root canal simulators to evaluate the performances.
- Continuous design refinements, working closely with the Odne team, and manufacturing partners to validate design before production.
From startup to market leader: the role of design in Odne’s growth
All these factors contributed to securing FDA Clearance for both OdneFill and OdneCure. This step was critical for their commercialization in the United States. Beyond regulatory validation, design played a strategic role in Odne’s success by:
📌 Strengthening brand identity, positioning Odne as a premium and innovative company in the dental industry.
📌 Attracting investors, thanks to the market-ready, distinctive design of its breakthrough medical devices.
📌 Facilitating large-scale production, ensuring a smooth transition from prototype to market.
This strategic approach helped Odne secure major investments, including a CHF 4.8 million (USD 5.5 million) funding round, led by DIA (Denali Investment Associates) and backed by key medical industry investors. With this funding, Odne was able to accelerate the commercialization of its products, consolidate its market position, and expand its global distribution network.
To crown this remarkable journey, in 2025, OdneFill and OdneCure received not one but two of the world’s most prestigious design awards: the German Design Award and the iF Design Award. These awards confirm the excellence of their design, the technological innovation behind them, and their tangible impact on the industry.
Design as a driving force for medical innovation and success
This medical equipment case study demonstrates how industrial design is a crucial factor in the success of technological products. In Odne’s case, design was not just about aesthetics—it was a strategic lever for innovation, certification, and business growth. Our collaboration with Odne serves as a prime example of continuous, multidisciplinary support, covering every phase of development—from ergonomic design and prototyping to certification and packaging. For Fuso Design, this experience further validates how well-executed design can transform innovative startups into industry leaders.
